Course Video & Notes

Week 10 – 11/13/13: “Mass Effect-s” & Dr. Kimberly Voll

Fascinating, provocative and challenging class covering violence and sexism in games, as well as sexism in the games industry.

Week 9 – 11/6/13: “Controlling Originality” & Andy Moore

It’s all here. Sorry for system mandated video cut off at the end. And for the fact that the way we connected Andy’s slides into the system through a secondary didn’t allow the video system to pick them up so you will have to download them and advance manually.

Week 8 – 10/30/13: “From Wheelbarrows to Holodecks” & Jennifer Kelly

The mysterious “missing first 20 seconds of audio” bug has made an unscheduled reappearance right at the front end. Apologies to Jennifer for a slightly over aggressive edit at the end. Since Jennifer was remote and our system only picked up her slides in class, you will have to download her slides and advance them manually to re-create the compelling nature of the live experience. On the YouTube version, we only have Jennifer’s audio (clear as a bell) over the video of…me sitting at the instructors desk. At least on the Mediasite versions you can switch me off (insert clever comment).

Week 7 – 10/23/13: “What’s it all about…Beta?” & Anoop Desai

The video of Anoop’s great guest appearance is not included, but his slides (& mine) are available below.

Week 6 – 10/16/13: “Ten Cases – Ten Clauses – Ten Contexts” & Roch Ripley Part 2

Here are the slides and video of the class. Note especially Roch Ripley’s trenchant and useful critique of the first part of the course as embodied in my previous slides. That said – “Switzerland”…really?

Week 5 – 10/9/13: “Creators, Consumers & Users” & Ian Verchere

The focus of Week 5 was an amazing guest stint from Ian Verchere “Taking Games Literally: Games As Semiotic Domain”. Unfortunately Ian’s slides don’t show up in the Mediasite versions (probably because they were so video heavy). However a lite version of those slides can be found below the videos.

Week 4 – 10/2/13: “Right to CreaTE or Rights of Creation” & Prof. Greg Lastowka

Week 4 features a wonderful talk from Greg Lastowka of Rutgers Law. Though we could see Greg’s slides in class the video-capture system cannot simultaneously access slides fed remotely and a remote video feed. So you are stuck with a second screen of me during Greg’s talk which most fortunately can simply be turned off (please). Greg’s slides are below so you can follow along courtesy of your own manual dexterity.

Note: There is currently a bit of a dead-zone between 1:00:34 & 1:04:19 as we set up for Greg, which you can painlessly skip over.

Week 3 – 9/25/13: “John Milton Plays GPL” & Steve Rechtshaffner

Here is Week 3. Came out pretty well other then my asking for a Kleenex to clean my glasses &  the surreal picture within picture within picture effect at the beginning of Steve’s presentation and the evidence of my scrambling to play TV producer and fix that effect. To download the slides just scroll over the image.

Week 2 – 9/11/13: “If Picasso had..” & Roch Ripley Part 1

Here is Week 2. Major points (but no marks) for finding Roch. Am certain this was simply an homage to the “Easter Egg” meme that prevails in video games.  Thankfully Roch has an awesome voice, so theatre of mind works just fine 😉 Related to this is the fact that in experimenting with the video, zoomed in a bit compared to last week. Surprise was that because the system has a digital lens, this resulted in some loss of resolution.

As with last week, the video and slide links below are:  1.Click-through to full size MediaSite player (video & slides); 2. Embedded MediaSite player (video & slides) but not expandable to full size – particularly great in background for audio only; 3. YouTube version (no slides); 4. Jon & Roch’s Slides for download. No 23 second loss of audio this week…

Week 1 – 9/4/13: “Introduction”

Thanks to all for a fun first class. Sorry for my scratchy voice. Was not auditioning for a post midnight FM radio gig. Working on getting better. The video and slide links below are:  1.Click-through to full size MediaSite player (video & slides); 2. Embedded MediaSite player (video & slides) but not expandable to full size – particularly great in background for audio only; 3. YouTube version (no slides); 4. Slides download. Please note that the first 23 seconds of audio are missing for some reason.
